Barrow Bangers British Bulldog Band Begins By Being Beat
The newly formed Barrow Bangers started their first season with a 3-0 defeat against the Millom Menagerie when they faced their first battle. The loss came after Barrow saw the largest marketing campaign in its recent history in which the team declared ‘Bangers Bang Heads’. Although, the slogan became partially true, when half the bangers knocked themselves out in the pre match huddle.
The first leg began quite well for the Bangers as they gained the upper hand by removing eight of Milloms front row. Local Painter and Decorator, Darren McMenzied, took a triple swoop showing a streak of raw strength that would put Former Strongman Geoff Capes to shame. But the rot soon crept in when four of the Banger players got caught in a self-induced stumble, leaving them wide open to a multi lift.
By the end of the third set Barrow could only field eighteen players as the rest of the squad were either in the first aid room or the queue for the first aid room. Millom stood strong and only needed two runs before removing all the Barrow Bangers, with the highlight being an up and under triple salco.
The manager, Colin Trith, aged 32, said, ‘There is only one-way from here and that is either win or draw. I also want to thank the crowd who came to witness this historic moment, we owe them a great debt for making it special.’
The next game is to be held on the 10th of Feb and tickets are available from the Barrow Bangers Stadium, sponsored by Bettys.

Barrow Tiddly Winker Went Wonkey
Just as we at the Barrow Evening Mail, and many bookies throughout furness expected, the local newcomer to the World Tiddly Wink Championships, Simon Flatthumbs, aged 27, blew the chance to beat the reigning champion. The event was held in The Duke of Edinburgh in front of a sellout crowd and the worlds sports press. 'I just couldn't get my balance right,' stated Simon, 'I felt like I was standing on a slightly skew whiff floor, although it had checked out as flat the previous day.'
Ivor Flipinski, the Russian National Champion, sailed into a 100 point lead in the first session. His run included a Triple Flick Bounce In and a Triple Counter Bounce Out scoring him an amazing 30 points in a single leg. 'I knew it was going to be a hard day when my first Tiddle went left,' said Simon, 'I know I aimed correctly but it wasn't until it missed it's mark that I realised something was wrong... I couldn't put my finger on it.'
As Simon reflected on his defeat within the confines of his own bedroom, it was only then that he discovered the problem with his balance was down to his pre-championship nerves, as he had inadvertently put two socks on one foot. Simon explained that 'Balance is the key when it comes to Tiddly Winks, you have got to be grounded and with this grounding comes confidence.'
We wish Simon all the luck for this coming season and you can see him play if you log onto the Local Tiddly Winks website for available dates.
